The name of the compound ${\text{P}}_2{\text{S}}_5$ which is used in the manufacture of safety matches is to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

Binary compounds that are formed between metals and non-metals through the transfer of electrons are called ionic compounds.

If the two elements in a binary compound are non-metals, then it is a molecular compound.

Rules of naming molecular compounds:

Name start with name of first non-metal and then second metal, replace the ending of the second element with “ide”.

While naming molecular compounds prefixes are used to indicate the number of a given element present in the compound like ” mono-” indicates one, “di-” indicates two, “tri-” is three, “tetra-” is four, “penta-” is five, and “hexa-” is six, “hepta-” is seven, “octo-” is eight, “nona-” is nine, and “deca” is ten.
