Concept Introduction:

Transition metals have the ability to form more than one positive ion and two ionic compounds with given non-metals.

The Stock system is the method for naming the metal ions that have more than one oxidation state in compounds indicated by the Roman numeral in parenthesis, just after the name of the metal ion.

The first element in the formula simply takes the name of the first metal, followed by the name of the second element by adding the suffix –ide to the non-metal element stem.
