The crude-oil pumping rig shown is driven at 20 rpm. The inside diameter of the well pipe is 2 in., and the diameter of the pump rod is 0.75 in. The length of the pump rod and the length of the column of oil lifted during the stroke are essentially the same, and equal to 6000 ft. During the downward stroke, a valve at the lower end of the pump rod opens to let a quantity of oil into the well pipe, and the column of oil is then lifted to obtain a discharge into the connecting pipeline. Thus, the amount of oil pumped in a given time depends upon the stroke of the lower end of the pump rod. Knowing that the upper end of the rod at D is essentially sinusoidal with a stroke of 45 in. and the specific weight of crude 011 is 56.2 1b/ft3, determine (a) the output of the well in ft3/min if the shaft is rigid, (b) the output of the well in ft3/min if the stiffness of the rod is 2210 N/m, the equivalent mass of the oil and shaft is 290 kg, and damping is negligible.

- The Wright Brothers designed an engine and propeller that would produce enough forward motion to lift a simple light airplane. The 3 meter diameter blade rotated at a constant 330 rotations per minute (RPM). How does the RPM of the tip of one blade compare to the RPM of the middle of the one blade (halfway towards the center of the propeller)? The RPM is twice as much. The RMP is the same. The RPM is half as much. The RPM is one quarter as much.arrow_forwardTwo cylinders rolling together have a speed ratio of 3:1. The center-to-center distance is 30in. Find the diameters of the cylinders if they are rotating in (a) the opposite direction, and (b) same direction.arrow_forwardTwo cylinders rolling in the same direction has a speed ratio of 4.2. If the diameter of the driven cylinder is 29 inches, find the diameter of the driver and the center distance between cylinders. DRIVER DIAMETER: CENTER DISTANCE:arrow_forward
- For items 4-5, consider the slider-crank mechanism shown. Crank AB is 0.500 m long. Rod BD is 1.500 m long. The velocity at point B is 0.500 m/s, ↖45.0°. Which of the following gives the closest value to the speed of the piston at D? Which of the following gives the closest values of the lengths of the sides of the triangle formed by points B and D and point C, the instantaneous center of rod BD?arrow_forwardPlease answer the question in 5mins I will rate your answer. Cam mechanisms are used in many machines. For example, cams open and close the valves in your car engine to admit gasoline vapor to each cylinder and to allow the escape of exhaust. The principle is illustrated in the figure below, showing a follower rod (also called a pushrod) of mass m resting on a wedge of mass M. The sliding wedge duplicates the function of a rotating eccentric disk on a camshaft in your car. Assume that there is no friction between the wedge and the base, between the pushrod and the wedge, or between the rod and the guide through which it slides. When the wedge is pushed to the left by the force F, the rod moves upward and does something such as opening a valve. By varying the shape of the wedge, the motion of the follower rod could be made quite complex, but assume that the wedge makes a constant angle of ? = 19.0°. Suppose you want the wedge and the rod to start from rest and move with constant…arrow_forwardThe figure below shows a sewing needle bar mechanism O1ABO2CD wherein the different dimensions are as follows: Crank O1A = 16 mm; ; vertical distance between O1 and O2 = 40 mm; ∠β=450 horizontal distance between O1 and O2 = 13 mm; O2B = 23 mm; AB = 35 mm; ∠O2BC=900 ; BC = 16 mm; CD = 40 mm. D lies vertically below O1. Find the velocity of needle at D for the given configuration. The crank O1A rotates at 400 rpm.arrow_forward

(a) What must be the ratio of the area of the cylinder that is being controlled to the area of the master cylinder? (b) What must be the ratio of their diameters? (c) By what factor is the distance through which the output force moves reduced relative to the distance through which the input force moves? Assume no losses due to friction.arrow_forwardThe figure below depicts the linkages of a pump mechanism. If Q2A is rotating at 10 rpm in a clockwise direction, determine the linear velocity of slider D when Q2A has moved 60 degrees from its original position. Use R&C method. - Five cylinders rolling in opposite directions has a speed ratio of A:B:C:D:E = 4:3:1:4:5. Ifcenter distance between cylinder A and C is 75 inches, find the diameter of cylinder E.arrow_forwardUnlike the common V6 engine, Subaru engines contain pistons that are horizontally opposed (see Wikipedia for more info). Luckily for us, this also makes for an interesting dynamics problem! At the instant shown, the crank arm's angular velocity is waB = 2,000 rpm (rotating clockwise) and the angle 0 = 40° with respect to the horizontal. Length of bar AB is r1 = 3 in. and the length of bar BD is r2 = 8 in. a) Clearly define coordinate systems for each link and write transformation arrays for each. b) Compute the velocity of point B in ft/s. Express your answer in rectangular coordinates. [Ans. to Check: 33.66 i– 40.11 j ft/sec] c) Determine the magnitude of the speed of the piston P in ft/s. Note: all answers should be positive since we only want to know the magnitude of the speed, not the direction (the piston can only move in the horizontal direction).
