Concept explainers
Explain why many developmental genes encode either transcription factors or signaling molecules.
To analyze:
To describe the reason for the fact that a number of developmental genes are responsible to encode for the transcription factors and signaling molecule.
Introduction:
The genes that direct the development and fate of an organism are known as developmental genes. Developmental genes code for the indicating molecule or transcription factor. The transcription of genetic information is controlled by the transcription factor.
Explanation of Solution
Transcription factor can initiate or stop the transcription of a particular gene in response to stimuli. This activity permits the variation in all morphology required for cellular differentiation. In this way, the transcription factor plays an important role in multicellular organism development. Bicoid is a transcription factor that is important for the development of the head region in drosophila.
The maturation of the cell at a functional level is known as differentiation. In the developing embryo, differentiation of various types of cell is directed by the signaling molecule; thus both, signaling molecule and transcription, are crucial for the proper development of the organism.
Signaling molecule and transcription are crucial for the proper development of the organism.

- Discuss the role of homeotic genes in development. Explain what happens to the phenotype of a fruit fly when a gain-of-function mutation in a homeotic gene causes the protein to be expressed in an abnormal region of the embryo. What are the consequences of a loss-of-function mutation in such a gene?arrow_forwardIn flies, the gap gene kruppel is expressed in a broad band in the middle of the embryo with giant expressed as its anterior border and knirps at its posterior border. How is the expression of kruppel limited to this band in the embryo? Select all that apply In cancer or transformed cells, the c-myc gene mutation would be recessive, and a loss of function mutation The c-myc gene is a tumor suppressor gene In cancer or transformed cells, the c-myc gene mutation would be dominant, and a gain of function mutation The c-myc gene is a proto-oncogenearrow_forwardDescribe the role of DNA methylation in gene expression in mammalian cells.arrow_forward
