Chapter 18, Problem 10Q
Summary Introduction

To explain: The reason that apoptosis occurs by a different mechanism from the cell death that occurs in cell necrosis.

Introduction: Regulated cell death is a counterintuitive yet crucial process in eukaryotic metazoan organisms. Apoptosis in simple terms can be defined as programmed cell death. The cell is kept alive with the trophic factors that are produced under well nutritional conditions. In the absence of trophic factors, the cells activate a suicide program called as intrinsic pathway of apoptosis. Cells enter apoptosis when they do not receive any signal or when apoptosis is initiated with signals from the adjacent cells (paracrine signaling) called death signals that bind to the death receptor called as extrinsic apoptotic pathway which occurs during development.

Summary Introduction

To explain: The consequences, if apoptosis were not achieved in a neat and orderly fashion, where the cell destroys itself from within and prevents leakage of its contents into extracellular space.
