Chapter 17.1, Problem 2SB
Summary Introduction

To review:

The distinction between horizontal gene transfer in bacteria and gene segregation in sexually reproducing organisms.

Introduction:

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) involves three processes, namely, transformation, transduction, and conjugation. In all these, foreign DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is transferred to bacteria. In sexually reproducing organisms, gene segregation occurs during gamete formation, which takes place by meiosis.

Why do you suppose that horizontal gene transfer is more prevalent in single-celled organisms than in multicellular organisms?
How does recombination in bacteria differ from recombination in eukaryotes? 1) Recombination does not occur in prokaryotes  2) Only the plasmid DNA goes through recombination in prokaryotes  3) Sister chromatids, not homologous chromosomes, exchange information during recombination in prokaryotes  4) A portion of DNA from genome is replaced with homologous DNA from another strain of bacteria.
In eukaryotes, sexual reproduction is the main process by which new gene combinations are generated. How do bacteria generate new gene combinations in the absence of sexual reproduction?
