Why is the following situation impossible? It is early on a Saturday morning, and much to your displeasure your nextdoor neighbor starts mowing his lawn. As you try to get back to sleep, your next-door neighbor on the other side of your house also begins to mow the lawn with an identical mowerthe same distance away. This situation annoys you greatly because the total sound now has twice the loudness it had when only one neighbor was mowing.
At an airport, a person is made to walk through the doorway of a metal detector, for security reasons. If she/he is carrying anything made of metal, the metal detector emits a sound. On what principle does this detector work?
A member of an aircraft maintenance crew wears protective earplugs that reduce the sound intensity by a factor of 355. When a jet aircraft is taking off, the sound intensity level experienced by the crew member is 72 dB. What sound intensity level would the crew member experience if he removed the protective earplugs?

- Female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes emit a buzz at about 4.00102 Hz, whereas male A. aegypti mosquitoes typically emit a buzz at about 6.00102 Hz. As a female mosquito is approaching a stationary male mosquito, is it possible that he mistakes the female for a male because of the Doppler shift of the sound she emits? How fast would the female have to be traveling relative to the male for him to make this mistake? Assume the speed of sound in the air is 343 m/s.arrow_forwardAlthough we can't hear them, the ultrasonic pulses are very loud. In order not to be deafened by the sound they emit, bats can temporarily turn off their hearing. Muscles in the ear cause the bones in their middle ear to separate slightly, so that they don't transmit vibrations to the inner ear. After an ultrasound pulse ends, a bat can hear an echo from an object a minimum of 1 m away. Approximately how much time after a pulse is emitted is the bat ready to hear its echo? A. 0.5 ms B. 1 ms C. 3 ms D. 6 msarrow_forwardGeorgia is standing on the sidewalk waiting to cross the street on a day when the pressure and temperature in the air are sufficiently atypical that we must treat the speed of sound in air as an unknown. Two cars are driving by; a red Porsche and a Honda Accord. Perhaps not surprisingly, the Porsche is driving quite a bit faster than the Honda. When the Porsche is driving toward Georgia, the frequency of the sound it makes is 1.5% higher than when the Porsche is driving away from her. When the Honda is driving away from Georgia, the frequency of the sound it makes is 0.9% lower than when it's driving toward her. Show that if uc is the speed of any car is at drives past Georgia, if v is the speed of sound in air, and if fr and fд are the frequencies she hears when the car is driving toward her and away from her respectively, then Vc = (€) +1 V. Use the equation you just derived to answer the following question: what percent higher is the speed of the Porsche compared to the speed of the…arrow_forward
- The noise level in an empty examination hall is 42 dB. When 50 physics students are writing an exam, the sounds of heavy breathing and pens traveling rapidly over paper cause the noise level to rise to 55 dB (not counting the occasional groans). Assuming that each student contributes an equal amount of noise power, find the noise level when half of the students have left the examination hall. Do not enter the unit.arrow_forwardTwo motors sitting near each other in a factory at slightly different rates. One runs at 805.0 rpm and the other at 775.0 rpm. You hear the combined sound intensity from the motors increase and then decrease periodically due to wave interference. What is the period of beats in seconds?arrow_forwardA concert loudspeaker suspended high off the ground emits 35 W of sound power. A small microphone with a 1.0 cm2 area is 50 m from the speaker. What are (a) the sound intensity and (b) the sound intensity level at the position of the microphone?arrow_forward
- Male Rana catesbeiana bullfrogs are known for their loud mating call. The call is emitted not by the frog’s mouth but by its eardrums, which lie on the surface of the head. And, surprisingly, the sound has nothing to do with the frog’s inflated throat. If the emitted sound has a frequency of 260 Hz and a sound level of 85 dB (near the eardrum), what is the amplitude of the eardrum’s oscillation? The air density is 1.21 kg/m3.arrow_forwardThe speed of sound in air is 331 m/s at atmospheric pressure and 0 Celsius. Suppose you put a electronic pinger in an air-tight glass jar and change the pressure of the air inside by a factor 1.5, while the volume, composition and temperature of the air remain the same. What speed would you measure for the sound inside the jar? Give your answer in m/sarrow_forwardAn aircraft flies directly overhead at an altitude of 5 km. If the sound of the aircraft is heard 6 s later, determine the speed and Mach number of the aircraft. Assume an average air temperature of 10°C.arrow_forward
- Sound having frequencies above the range of human hearing (about 20, 000 Hz) is called ultrasound. Waves above this frequency can be used to penetrate the body and to produce images by reflecting from surfaces. In a typical ultrasound scan, the waves travel through body tissue with a speed of 1500 m/s. For a good, detailed image, the wavelength should be no more than 1.0 mm. What frequency sound is required for a good scan?arrow_forwardAn interstate highway has been built through a neighborhood in a city. In the afternoon, the sound level in an apartment in the neighborhood is 80.0 dB as 100 cars pass outside the window every minute. Late at night, the traffic flow is only five cars per minute. What is the average late - night sound level?arrow_forwardA brand of earplugs reduces the sound intensity level by 27 dB. By what factor do these earplugs reduce the acoustic intensity?arrow_forward
