Chapter 16.3, Problem 3PE
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: From the given OH- concentration of a blood sample, the pH of the blood has to be calculated.

Concept Introduction:

pHandpOH:

pH is the negative logarithm of concentration of H+ ion in a solution.

It can be expressed as

pH=log[H+]

pOH is the negative logarithm of concentration of OH ion in a solution.

It can be expressed as

pOH=log[OH]

If the value of pH has been given then the concentration of H+ ion can be calculated as follows:

pH=log10[H+][H+]=10-pH

If the value of pOH has been given then the concentration of OH ion can be calculated as follows:

pOH=log10[OH][OH]=10-pOH

pHandpOH can be related as follows:

pH+pOH=14pH=14-pOHpOH=14-pH

In the pHandpOH calculation, the hydrogen ion and hydroxide ion concentrations have the unit of mol/L which is known as Molarity. It can be represented as M.
