Concept explainers
Dutch elm disease is caused by a fungus transmitted to elm trees by the elm bark beetle. The female beetle, when she has located an attractive elm tree, releases several pheromones, including multistriatin, below. These pheromones attract male beetles, which bring with them the deadly fungus.
Treating multistriatin with dilute aqueous acid at room temperature leads to the formation of a product,

- The compound p-methoxybenzonitrile N-oxide, which has the formula CH3OC6H4CNO, reacts with itself to form a dimer—a molecule that consists of two p-methoxybenzonitrile N-oxide units connected to each other (CH3OC6H4CNO)2. The reaction can be represented as A + A → B or 2 A → B where A represents p-methoxybenzonitrile N-oxide and B represents the dimer, (CH3OC6H4CNO)2. For the reaction in carbon tetrachloride at 40 °C with an initial concentration of 0.011 M, these data were obtained: Determine the rate law for the reaction. Determine the rate constant. Determine the order of the reaction with respect to A.arrow_forwardWhich of the following is true about fluorescence intensity of the molecule? I Fluorescence is observed in planar molecules and its intensity increase with an increase in the number of aromatic rings II When zinc is added to a hydroxyl quinoline solution the fluorescence intensity increased due to the formation of a complex which increases the rigidity of the molecule. III On increasing the intensity of the incident radiation the fluorescence intensity increases IV On increasing the concentration of the fluorigenic molecule, the fluorescence intensity increases. What are the key differences of the IR spectrum of aspirin with that of the starting material, salicylic acid? What are the similarities? Interpret the IR spectra of each by assigning the major peaks.arrow_forward

H H H The 7-electrons in this molecule are delocalized over the entire molecule. The wavelength of maximum absorption in the UV-visible part of the spectrum in benzene is 255 nm. Is the corresponding wavelength shorter or longer than 255 nm for naphthalene?arrow_forwardExplain how carbon is detected qualitatively.arrow_forward
- Ff.238.arrow_forwardC8H8O produces an IR spectrum with 3063, 1686, 1646 cm signals. HNMR is a singlet at 2.6ppm (3H), and multiplet at 7.5 (5H). What is the productarrow_forwardan unknown has the formula C₆H₁₂O. The IR spectrum of this substance has a strong vibration near 1700 cm⁻¹ . Which structure below is consistent with these data?arrow_forward
- 2. Molecules absorb IR radiation consistent with vibrational energy and rotational energy. Which of these is present in condensed phases (liquid, solution, solid)?arrow_forwardThe concentration of a dilute aspirin solution is 0.000530 M 0.000530 M . Standard solutions of this compound were used to prepare a Beer's law plot which gives a slope of 1550.1 M −1 1550.1 M − 1 . What is the expected absorbance value for the aspirin solution?arrow_forwardCovalent bonds in a molecule absorb radiation in the IR region and vibrate at characteristic frequencies. (a) The C---O bond absorbs radiation of wavelength 9.6 mm. What frequency (in s-1) corresponds to that wavelength? (b) The H---Cl bond has a frequency of vibration of 8.652x1013 Hz. What wavelength (in mm) corresponds to that frequency?arrow_forward
