Personnel Planning; TDABC Recent competitive pressures have caused National InsuranceCompany to examine policies regarding personnel planning. As a start, the company has decided toexperiment with and develop a time-driven ABC model for its claims processing center.A study of this support center indicates the following three primary activities: remote processingof customer claims, 0.5 hour; onsite processing of customer claims, 1.0 hour; and updating/maintaining customer records, 0.2 hour. Onsite processing is required for larger claims, while remote processing is done for smaller claims. (For onsite processing, assume—for simplicity—that the claimsprocessors use their own automobiles.) All claims will require that the customers’ records be updated. The claims processing center currently employs three full-time employees. Total annual cost ofthe center (salaries, depreciation, utilities, etc.) is estimated at $255,000. The net amount of availablepersonnel time per year for this…
CARLA'S QUICK SERVICE RESTAURANT JOB⁹²
Carla works at a typical quick service restaurant (QSR).
She is never involved in any problem-solving activities
because the system dictates they must defer to man-
agers when problems arise. In addition, she has never
been asked to provide any input at the store level of the
organization. Her manager tells her what to do and
micro-manages her work. Daily information, sche-
dules, and work methods changes (e.g., when new
menu items are introduced) are posted on notes in a
break room bulletin board. Carla isn't very happy in
her job and is thinking of quitting to find something
else. She has seen about half of her coworkers quit in
the last year.
Discussion Questions
1. High attrition rates in the QSR industry may be
attributed to low levels of employee engagement
within the organization. How does high turnover
impact product quality and customer service in the
QSR industry, as well as the costs to the
organization?
2. How can Carla's manager or…

- Consider a law firm with 15 lawyers and 3 paralegals. The firm is struggling to keep up with the high demand for its services, particularly during the busy litigation seasons. It has been observed that the lawyers spend a significant amount of their time on administrative tasks that could potentially be handled by paralegals. After a careful study of the work distribution within the firm, it was determined that 35% of the activities carried out by the lawyers are administrative in nature. Given that each lawyer works 50 hours a week, please determine: (a) How many additional paralegals should the firm hire to handle the administrative tasks currently performed by the lawyers? (b) If the lawyers' time spent on administrative tasks is redirected to billable legal work, by what percentage could the firm potentially increase its billable hours?arrow_forward[The following information applies to the questions displayed below.] The following are the car repair shop data: TETE Ticket No. Work Ticket No. Work Ticket No. Work 1 Lube & oil 11 Battery 21 Battery Tires 2 Lube & oil 12 Tires 22 3 Brakes 13 Brakes 23 Brakes 4 Lube & oil 14 Transmission 24 Transmission Lube & oil 15 Brakes 25 Brakes Tires 16 Battery 26 Lube & oil 7 Tires 17 Brakes 27 Lube & oil 8. In the past, the firm has assigned each project to a single member of its highly trained professional staff. This person would both gather and analyze the data Using this approach, an experienced person can complete an average of 10 such projects in an eight-hour day. The firm's management is thinking of assigning two people to each project in order to allow them to specialize and become more efficient The process would require the data gatherer to fill out a matrix on the computer, check it and transmit it to the statistical analysis program for the analyst to complete. Data can be gathered on one project while the analysis is being completed on another, but the analysis must be complete before the statistical analysis program can accept the new data. After some practice, the new process can be completed with a standard time of 20 minutes…arrow_forward
