Chapter 15, Problem 7EQ
Summary Introduction

To review:

The expected result of the blot (a, b, or c) based upon the information about ferritin mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) regulation and the expected result if, the gel is probed with complementary DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) of transferrin receptor mRNA.

Introduction:

The Northern blotting technique is used to identify the type and amount of RNA that isexpressed in a cell. The RNAs that are isolated from the cells are separated by gel electrophoresis which, is then blotted to a nylon membrane. The membrane is placed in a solution of a labeled DNA probe which, is complementary to a particular RNA. The bands thus formed, are analyzed to determine the type of RNA complementary to probed DNA and the position or thickness of the bands reveal the amount of RNA that is expressed in a particular cell.
