Hyperammonemia is the condition wherein the level of ammonia in the bloodstream rises due to the inability of the liver to convert ammonia to urea. Ammonia is a nitrogenous waste that is formed during protein catabolism in the cells. As such ammonia is a toxic substance, which is why it is further converted to urea, a less toxic substance and then excreted.
