Concept Introduction:
Functional group:
Functional group is said to be a group of atoms which is responsible for the characteristic properties of a compound.
Chiral center:
The carbon atom bonded to four different groups is said to be chiral carbon or asymmetric carbon. An organic compound is said to be optically active when it contains at least one chiral center.
(b)
Interpretation:
The four step synthesis of a racemic mixture of ibuprofen from 4-isobutylbenzaldehyde, using inorganic reagents and one organometallic reactant has to be given.
Concept Introduction:
Organometallic reactant:
The reactant formed by the interaction of magnesium (metal) with organic halide in presence of ether is known as Grignard reagent or organometallic reactant. They are used to change the carbon skeleton of a starting carbonyl compound.
