Explanation of Solution

Introduction:

There are mainly two types of waves: longitudinal wave and transverse waves. When particles of the medium oscillate in the direction of wave propagation, it is called longitudinal wave. When the particles of the medium oscillate at right angle to the direction of the wave propagation, it is called transverse wave.

A medium (solid, liquid or gas) is required for propagation of longitudinal waves unlike some transverse waves which can propagate in vacuum (electromagnetic waves). Sound waves are a classic example of longitudinal waves.
