When the bar is hit by hammer along the length of the bar, the motion of the particle remains along the length of the bar, so the wave produced in this case is longitudinal waves.
When the bar is hit by hammer right angle to the length of the bar then the motion of the particle remains normal to the length of the bar. So, the wave produced in this case is transverse waves.
