AIDS and AZT In a study (reported in the New York Times, February 15, 1991) on the effects of AZT in slowing the development of AIDS symptoms, 338 veterans whose immune systems were beginning to falter after infection with the AIDS virus were randomly assigned either to receive AZT immediately or to wait until their T cells showed severe immune weakness. The study classified the veterans’ race, whether they received AZT immediately, and whether they developed AIDS symptoms during the three-year study. Let x1 denote whether they used AZT (1 = yes, 0 = no) and let x2 denote race (1 = white, 0 = black). A logistic
- a. Interpret the sign of the effect of AZT.
- b. Show how to interpret the AZT effect for a particular race by comparing the estimated probability of AIDS symptoms for black veterans with and without immediate AZT use.
- c. The se value was 0.279 for the AZT use effect. Does AZT use have a significant effect at the 0.05 significance level? Show all steps of a test to justify your answer.

- What is an experiment?arrow_forwardDo cell phones increase drivers' reaction times while driving? A 2003 American Journal of Health Education study investigated the effects of cell phone use on reaction time. In the study, 60 participants were randomly selected and placed into one of two groups: the cell phone group or the control group. Those in the control group participated in the experiment with no distractions, whereas those in the cell phone group had access to text documents on a cell phone. Participants in each group were then asked to take a computerized reaction time test. Researchers then recorded each subject's reaction time in seconds. The table shows the results of the experiment. For 1-hour per day, half the participants were randomly assigned to play violent video games, while the other half played a nonviolent video game. A test for aggression was administered at the end of the year, and each participant received a score between 1 and 50 (higher scores indicate greater aggression). The results of the study are shown below: Factor 1 10 years 20 years old old Violent 35 25 Factor games 2 Nonviolent 25 45 games Is there a main effect of age? If so, which age shows more aggression?arrow_forward
- In a study of the adverse effects of x-rays among children, a retrospective cohort study was done using records from several large children's hospitals for the period of 1980 to 1985. 5,000 children were selected as a representative population of ill children seen at the hospitals during that time. Subjects were classified according to whether or not they received an x-ray during their stay in the hospital and were followed from their hospital stay through 2005 for the development of cancer. During the follow-up period, 30 incident cancers occurred in 3,000 children who had received an x-ray, and 5 incident cancers occurred in the 2,000 children who had not received an x-ray during their hospitalization. 1q. What are the rates of cancer incidence in each exposure group (per 1,000)? b.What is the attributable risk of cancer due to x-ray in this study population? 11c.. What is the risk ratio for the effect of exposure on the development of cancer in this study? What is the interpretation…arrow_forward"Does ginkgo improve memory?" The law allows marketers of herbs and other natural substances to make health claims that are not supported by evidence. Brands of ginkgo extract claim to "improve memory and concentration." A randomized experiment found some statistically significant evidence for such effects. The subjects were 250 healthy volunteers over 65 years old. They were randomly assigned to take ginkgo or a placebo pill (a dummy pill that looks and tastes the same). All the subjects took a battery of tests for learning and memory before treatment started and again after six weeks. a). The article said the study was double-blind. What does this mean in the context of this study? Be very specific on who's being blinded and explain why they should be blinded. b). You suspect physical fitness and mental fitness go hand-in-hand. Create a flow chart to describe a design for an experiment to include the confounding variable physical fitness. Be very specific in your design. Include all…arrow_forwardDark Chocolate for Good Health A study¹ examines chocolate's effects on blood vessel function in healthy people. In the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 11 people received 46 grams (1.6 ounces) of dark chocolate (which is naturally flavonoid-rich) every day for two weeks, while a control group of 10 people received a placebo consisting of dark chocolate with low flavonoid content. Participants had their vascular health measured (by means of flow-mediated dilation) before and after the two-week study. The increase over the two-week period was measured, with larger numbers indicating greater vascular health. For the group getting the good dark chocolate, the mean increase was 1.3 with a standard deviation of 2.32, while the control group had a mean change of -0.96 with a standard deviation of 1.58. ¹Engler, M., et. al., "Flavonoid-rich dark chocolate improves endothelial function and increases plasma epicatechin concentrations in healthy adults," Journal of the…arrow_forward
- Birthweight In 2003 the Journal of the AmericanMedical Association reported a study examining thepossible impact of air pollution caused by the 9/11 attack New York’s World Trade Center on the weight ofbabies. Researchers found that 8% of 182 babies born tomothers who were exposed to heavy doses of soot andash on September 11 were classified as having low birthweight. Only 4% of 2300 babies born in another NewYork City hospital whose mothers had not been near thesite of the disaster were similarly classified. Does thisindicate a possibility that air pollution might be linked toa significantly higher proportion of low-weight babies?a) Was this an experiment? Explain. b) Test an appropriate hypothesis and state your conclu-sion in context. c) If you concluded there is a difference, estimate thatdifference with a confidence interval and interpret thatinterval in context.arrow_forwardVasectomies and Prostate Cancer. In the United States, approximately 450,000 vasectomies are performed each year. In this surgical procedure for contraception, the tube carrying sperm from the testicles is cut and tied. Several studies have been conducted to analyze the relationship between vasectomies and prostate cancer. The results of one such study by E. Giovannucci et al. appeared in the paper “A Retrospective Cohort Study of Vasectomy and Prostate Cancer in U.S. Men” (Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol. 269(7), pp. 878–882). Of 21,300 men who had not had a vasectomy, 69 were found to have prostate cancer; of 22,000 men who had had a vasectomy, 113 were found to have prostate cancer. a. At the 1% significance level, do the data provide sufficient evidence to conclude that men who have had a vasectomy are at greater risk of having prostate cancer? Consider men who had had a vasectomy Population 2. b. Is this study a designed experiment or an observational study?…arrow_forwardQuit Smoking: The New England Journal of Medicine published the results of a double-blind, placebo-controlled experiment to study the effect of nicotine patches and the antidepressant bupropion on quitting smoking. The target for quitting smoking was the 8th day of the experiment. In this experiment researchers randomly assigned smokers to treatments. We conducted a hypothesis test to determine if the side effect rates are significantly different for nicotine patches versus bupropion at a 5% level of significance. (The normality conditions are met by the data.) The P-value is 0.04. What can we conclude? We reject the null hypothesis. The side effects are more painful for people taking bupropion. We reject the null hypothesis. The side effect rate for bupropion is significantly higher than the side effect rate for the nicotine patches. We fail to reject the null hypothesis. The side effect rates are different, but not significantly different. We reject the null hypothesis. The…arrow_forward
