The solar system is 25,000 light years from the center of our Milky Way galaxy. One light year is the distance light travels in one year at a speed of
a. Assuming the orbit is circular, what is the period of the solar system’s orbit? Give your answer in years.
b. Our solar system was formed roughly 5 billion years ago. How many orbits has it completed?
c. The gravitational force on the solar system is the net force due to all the matter inside our orbit. Most of that matter is concentrated near the center of the galaxy. Assume that the matter has a spherical distribution, like a giant star. What is the approximate mass of the galactic center?
d. Assume that the sun is a typical star with a typical mass. If galactic matter is made up of stars, approximately how many stars are in the center of the galaxy?
Astronomers have spent many years trying to determine how many stars there are in the Milky Way. The number of stars seems to be only about 10% of what you found in part d. in other words, about 90% of the mass of the galaxy appears to be in some form other than stars. This is called the dark mailer of the universe. No one knows what the dark matter is. This is one of the outstanding scientific questions of our day.

- Astronomical observatrions of our Milky Way galaxy indicate that it has a mass of about 8.01011 solar masses. A star orbiting on the galaxy’s periphery is about 6.0104 light-years from its center. (a) What should the orbital period of that star be? (b) If its period is 6.0107 years instead, what is the mass of the galaxy? Such calculations are used to imply the existence of other matter, such as a very massive black hole at the center of the Milky Way.arrow_forwardTwo planets in circular orbits around a star have speed of v and 2v . (a) What is the ratio of the orbital radii of the planets? (b) What is the ratio of their periods?arrow_forwardA number of gas giant planets orbiting other stars at distances less than 1 A.U. have been discovered. Because of their proximity to their parent stars, and their compositional similarity to Jupiter, they have been labeled “Hot Jupiters”. The orbital radius of one of these planets is 0.06 A.U. with average orbital speed 600 km/sec. What is the length of this planet’s year in Earth (solar) days? Estimate the mass, M, of its parent star in terms of the mass of the sun (M) using Newton’s first form of Kepler’s 3rd Law. Calculate the star’s luminosity, L, in terms of the luminosity of the sun (L☉), Note: (LL=MM4where L ~ 4 × 1026 W ). The radius of this planet is 1.5 times the radius of Jupiter. Assuming its equilibrium temperature is the temperature at which the planet radiates as much energy as it receives from its star, estimate the temperature of the planet. The value of the planet’s albedo is 0.8. (NOTE: The intensity of the star’s radiant power at a distance d from the star is…arrow_forward
- Hi there. number six on this worksheet is really puzzling me. Can I get an explanation so I know how to do it in the future?arrow_forwardThe Earth's orbit around the Sun is elliptical (oval shaped). However, the elongation is small, and for our discussion here, we take the orbit to be circular with a radius of approximately 93,000,000 mi. a. Find the linear speed (in mph) of the Earth through its orbit around the Sun. Round to the nearest hundred miles per hour. b. How far does the Earth travel in its orbit in one day? Round to the nearest thousand miles.arrow_forwardThe orbit of Earth’s moon has a period of 27.3 days and a radius (semi-major axis) of 2.57 ×10-3 A.U. = 3.85 × 105 km. What is the mass of Earth? At what position would you put a 20 kg mass if you wanted the net force on A to be zero, all other masses and positions remaining the same?arrow_forwardTwo planets orbit a star. You can ignore the gravitational interactions between the planets. Planet 1 has orbital radius r1 and planet 2 has r2 = 4r1 . Planet 1 orbits with period T1 . Planet 2 orbits with periodA.
