Question
Chapter 13, Problem 53P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The greenhouse effect should be defined.
Concept introduction:
The three main constituents of the atmosphere: oxygen, nitrogen and argon. These are small and non-polar molecules that don't absorb infrared energy. However, water vapor, carbon dioxide and some other gases produce a green house effect. These gases are said to be green house gases.
The infrared radiation from sun radiates towards space, but greenhouse gases in the atmosphere absorb and reemit these photons, which results in the containment of some of the energy near the surface. This makes the air, water and land warmer than they would be without the gases.
