Question
Chapter 13, Problem 38P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation: Explain why the chlorine content in ocean is not responsible for ozone layer depletion.
Concept Introduction: Ozone layer depletion takes place via free radicals which includes chloride ions. CFC molecules when reach the stratosphere, UV radiations break them to produce chlorine atoms with high reactivity. Chlorine radicals then react with ozone molecules to break them into oxygen atom and oxygen molecule. The chloride radicals can be regenerated in the 2nd step resulting breaking of more ozone molecules.
