Chapter 13, Problem 2DQ
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:The factors that determine the charges for an ion in an ionic compound needs to be determined.

Concept Introduction: A chemical compound can be formed by either ionic bond or covalent bond between bonded atoms.

The ionic compound is formed by opposite charge ions; cations and anions. The charge balance on both ions makes the ionic compound neutral. In the chemical formula of ionic compound, the cation must be written first followed by ionic symbol of anion.

From the following ions and their radii (in pm), choose a pair that gives the strongest ionic bonding and a pair that givesthe weakest: Mg²⁺72; K⁺138; Rb⁺152; Ba²⁺135; Cl⁻181;O²⁻140; I⁻220
Which elements (Groups) of the periodic table provide the most unstable ions (anions)? Give the name of such elements according to the description of the periodic table.
Write the empirical formula for at least four ionic compounds that could be formed from the following ions: + Fe³+, SO², PO¾¯, NH 0,0,... X Ś
