Concept introduction:
The ratio of NAD/NADH and NADPH/NADP or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate indicates the intracellular redox potentials and it influences the driving force thermodynamically of various reactions taking place in vivo. The reactions which have large thermodynamic driving force have higher ratio of NADPH/NADP. The reactions which consume NADPH take place near to equilibrium; hence, NADPH/NADP concentration ratio has a significant role in driving the reactions that involve synthesis of certain metabolic products such as amino acids, fatty acids etc.
