Chapter 13, Problem 17RQ
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Relationship between vapor pressure and boiling point has to be explained.

Concept Introduction:

The temperature at which vapor pressure becomes equal to the external pressure is termed as boiling point temperature.

When pressure exerted by vapor comes in contact with the liquid that pressure is termed as vapor pressure. It is also defined as the tendency of liquid to move towards its vapor state that is in equilibrium with the liquid.

What kind of intermolecular forces act between a chloroform (CHCI) molecule and a carbon monoxide molecule?
Discuss the different types of intermolecular forces that exist between molecules. Give an example of how intermolecular forces can affect the thermodynamic properties of fluids. Be specific and name the chemical compounds.
Hydrogen peroxide is a liquid at room temperature with a boiling point of 150°C, whereas ethyne is a gas at room temperature with a boiling point of -84°C. Draw the molecules. Based on intermolecular forces, explain this difference in physical properties of these compounds that have similar chemical formulas and molar masses.
