Chapter 13, Problem 15LO
Summary Introduction

To compare: The types of pneumothorax.

Concept introduction: The existence of air or gas in the pleural space caused by a rupture in the visceral pleurae or the parietal pleurae and the chest wall is known as pneumothorax. It further leads to accumulation of fluid in the lungs. Usually, air separates the parietal and visceral pleurae and it destroys the negative pressure of the pleural space as well as it interrupts the equilibrium between the chest wall and the elastic recoil forces of the lungs.
