Chapter 12, Problem 8CT
Summary Introduction

To answer:

Without reference to genetic sequences, mycologists are certain that none of the septate, filamentous Deuteromycetes will be shown to make zygospores. How can they be certain, when the sexual stages of Deuteromycetes are still unknown?

Introduction:

Deuteromycetes are commonly known as imperfect fungi. It is also known as anamorphic fungi; only asexual or vegetative phases of this fungi are known. Deutromycetes only produce asexual spores or conidial spores. Based on the structure and colour of the conidia they are classified. Few are saprophytic and others live in terrestrial as fee living forms. E.g. Alternaria, Colletotrichum and Trichoderma. These fungi have a great impact on causing serious diseases to plants such as wilt disease, botrytis blight etc. In human, they cause diseases such as aspergillosis, candidiasis and ringworm. Penicillium, a member of this group has a major value for therapeutic purposes and is commercially important.

All organisms need nitrogen in order to grow and repair. Although nitrogen exists in its elemental form in the atmosphere, it cannot be directly used by plants. 7 Where else can plants obtain their nitrogen from? Plants make their own nitrogen. B Plants get it from animals. Plants get it from the soil.
