The method for calculating the equilibrium constant, pH and degree dissociation of weak acids and bases should be explained.
Concept Introduction:
- A system is referred to be in a state of equilibrium if the
rate of forward reaction equals the rate of the reverse reaction. - A system at equilibrium is characterized by the equilibrium constant which depends on the concentrations of the reactants and products.
- In the case of dissociation of weak acids and bases, there is a dynamic equilibrium between the acid (or base) and its constituent ions
- The equilibrium constant is such cases is referred to as the acid dissociation constant Ka or the base dissociation constant Kb
