Chapter 12, Problem 12.30PAE
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: From the two reactions with different equilibrium constants K1 and K2, the equilibrium constant for another reaction has to be determined.

Concept introduction:

  • For a reaction aA+ bBcC + dD, the equilibrium constant is given by Keq = [C]c[D]d[A]a[B]b
    • Equilibrium constant is directly proportional to products and inversely proportional to the reactants.

    For a reversible reaction, Keqforwardreaction = 1Keqbackwardreaction

    • If a reaction is multiplied by n, then the Keq  value changes as Keqnew = [Keqold]n

    Given:

    K1=3×1013 for the reaction HAsO42(aq)AsO43-(aq)+H+(aq)

    K2=1.8×107 for the reaction HAsO42(aq)+H+(aq)H2AsO4-(aq)
