Summary Introduction
Conjugation is the mechanism of horizontal gene transfer and it occurs in both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. The cell to cell contact is needed for the process of conjugation. Chromosomal genes are transferred through plasmid-mediated conjugation. The F plasmid of E. coli mobilizes the bacterial chromosome for transfer in conjugation. The F plasmid is an episome, the plasmid can integrate into the chromosome of the host cell.
