Concept explainers
a.
Does the situation represent a direct variation or inverse varaition?
a.
Answer to Problem 5P
Direct Variation.
Explanation of Solution
Given:
You buy sweaters in a clothing store for $35 each.
Calculation:
Cost of 1 sweater = $35
So cost of x sweaters =$35x
If the no. of sweater increases then the total cost also increases.
So it is a direct variation because cost increases if no. of sweaters increases..
b.
Does the situation represent a direct variation or inverse varaition?
b.
Answer to Problem 5P
Inverse Variation.
Explanation of Solution
Given:
You walk 5ml each day and your speed and time spent walking vary each day.
Calculation:
You walk each day = 5ml
Let your speed = x ml/hrs
And your time spent in walking = y hrs
Your speed and time both depends inversely to each other.
So it is a inverse variation because if speed increases then time decreases and if time increases then speed decreases.
