Concept explainers
When dividing a polynomial by a monomial, you can multiply by the reciprocal or use long division. How are these two methods the same and how they different.
Explanation of Solution
Concept Used:
If an expression of smaller degree divides another expression completely, then the divisor expression will be a factor of the dividend expression.
Calculation:
When dividing a polynomial by a monomial, you can multiply by the reciprocal or use long division. In first method, we just distribute the monomial on the denominator of each terms of the numerator polynomial.
While using the long division, we always divide the leading term by the monomial in each term until the remainder is lesser degree than the divisor.
While dividing the polynomial by a monomial, it is easy to use the first method to multiply by the reciprocal of the monomial so that can get rid of the denominator. Or simplify the expression using the exponent properties.
