In an observational study it was found that people who had received the flu shot this year had better blood pressure readings, on average, than people who did not. Can it be claimed that the flu shot is the cause of the lower overall blood pressure? Why or why not?
Researchers wanted to know the effectiveness of a new anti-venom shot. A study was conducted on 245 children who had nonlethal scorpion stings. The ages of the children ranged from 6 months to 18 years old. Each child was randomly assigned to receive a shot of the anti-venom or a placebo shot. Researchers recorded whether or not their condition improved over the next four hours. They found that about 73% of the children who were given anti-venom saw an improvement in their condition whereas only about 23% of the children who were given the placebo saw an improvement in their condition.
Identify the population. The population is all children 6 months to 18 years old with nonlethal scorpion stings.
Identify the sample. The sample is 245 children 6 months to 18 years old with nonlethal scorpion stings.
What is the treatment variable?
The treatment variable is the anti-venom shot.
What is the response (or outcome) variable? The outcome variable is improvements in their condition.…

She interviewed all patients at several area hospitals and found that patients in the hospital for treatment of heart problems drank an average of 2.7 cups of coffee per day (Margin of error is 1.4 cups) while those patients being treated for other problems averaged only 1.4 cups of coffee per day (Margin of error is 0.8 cups). What conclusion can you draw about coffee as a cause of heart problems from this information?A) Coffee is bad for you.B) Coffee is good for you.C) Heart patients drink more coffee than other patients.D) None, because only patients in hospitals were interviewed.arrow_forward
- Pap smears are a diagnostic test used to detect cervical cancer. Although the test has high specificity, it also has low sensitivity. As a result, women have to be screened often. Using the definitions of sensitivity and specificity, explain why increased frequency of screening is needed when sensitivity is low and specificity is high.arrow_forwardInternet addiction has been described as excessive and uncontrolled Internet use. The authors of a research article used a score designed to measure the extent and severity of Internet addiction in a study of 837 male and 874 female sixth-grade students in China. Internet Addiction was measured using Young's Internet Addiction Diagnostic Test. The lowest possible score on this test is zero, and higher scores indicate higher levels of Internet addiction. For the sample of males, the mean Internet Addiction score was 1.51 and the standard deviation was 2.02. For the sample of females, the mean was 1.01 and the standard deviation was 1.67. For purposes of this exercise, you can assume that it is reasonable to regard these two samples as representative of the population of male Chinese sixth-grade students and the population of female Chinese sixth grade students, respectively. The standard deviation is greater than the mean for each of these samples. - Internet addiction has been described as excessive and uncontrolled Internet use. The authors of a research article used a score designed to measure the extent and severity of Internet addiction in a study of 835 male and 873 female sixth-grade students in China. Internet Addiction was measured using Young's Internet Addiction Diagnostic Test. The lowest possible score on this test is zero, and higher scores indicate higher levels of Internet addiction. For the sample of males, the mean Internet Addiction score was 1.53 and the standard deviation was 2.02. For the sample of females, the mean was 1.07 and the standard deviation was 1.68. For purposes of this exercise, you can assume that it is reasonable to regard these two samples as representative of the population of male Chinese sixth-grade students and the population of female Chinese sixth grade students, respectively. Nationally, 40% of adults suffer from atherosclerosis. Kris suspects that the proportion of people with atherosclerosis in high- pollution areas is higher. In a random sample of 600 residents of high-pollution areas, he finds that 270 (45%) subjects have atherosclerosis. At the 1% level (α = .01), is this good evidence that people in high-pollution areas are more likely to have atherosclerosis? (a) Which of the following is the Ha ? (research claim or alternate) A. - The table below refers to a case control study on the association between sulfones and streptomycin drugs in the treatment of leprosy. Subjects were sampled based on their clinical change to treatment and then asked whether they had a high or low degree of infiltration. The degree of infiltration measures a type of skin damage. We will use clinical change response scores {-1, 0, 1, 2, 3}. The question of interest is whether degree of infiltration is associated with clinical change. (a) Compute the sample proportions of having a high degree of infiltration for each clinical change group? What type of variable is Clinical Change? (B)Conduct a Cochran-Armitage trend test at the 5% significance level to determine whether there is an association between degree of infiltration and clinical change. (C)Now, ignore the fact that clinical change is an ordinal variable. Conduct a chi-squared test for association between degree of infiltration and clinical change at the 5% significance…arrow_forwardIn an article about unusual allergies, a doctor explained that allergy to sulfites is usually seen in patients with asthma. The typical reaction is a sudden increase in asthma symptoms after eating a food containing sulfites. Studies are performed to estimate the percentage of the nation's 10 million asthmatics who are allergic to sulfites. In one survey, 32 of 400 randomly selected asthmatics in the country were found to be allergic to sulfites. Find and interpret a 90% confidence interval for the proportion, p, of all asthmatics in the country who are allergic to sulfites.
