Chapter 10.5, Problem 15BSC
Appendix B Data Sets. In Exercises 13-16, refer to the indicated data set in Appendix B and use technology to obtain results.
15. Predicting IQ Score Refer to Data Set 8 "IQ and Brain Size” in Appendix B and find the best regression equation with IQ score as the response (y) variable. Use predictor variables of brain volume and/or body weight. Why is this equation best? Based on these results, can we predict someone's IQ score if we know their brain volume and body weight? Based on these results, docs it appear that people with larger brains have higher IQ scores?

This might have occurred because when the pole vault was a new event there was much room for improvement in vaulters’ performances, whereas now even the best training can produce only incremental advances. Let’s see whether concentrating on more recent results gives a better predictor of future records. (a) Use the data in Table 2 (page 176) to complete the table of winning pole vault heights shown in the margin. (Note that we are using x=0 to correspond to the year 1972, where this restricted data set begins.) (b) Find the regression line for the data in part ‚(a). (c) Plot the data and the regression line on the same axes. Does the regression line seem to provide a good model for the data? (d) What does the regression line predict as the winning pole vault height for the 2012 Olympics? Compare this predicted value to the actual 2012 winning height of 5.97 m, as described on page 177. Has this new regression line provided a better prediction than the line in Example 2?arrow_forward
- Using your graphing calculator, make a scatter plot of the data from the table. Then graph your model from Question 2 along with the data. How well does your model fit the data? What could you do to try to improve your model?arrow_forwardPlease do not give solution in image format thanku Explain whether each scenario is a classification or regression problem, and indicate whether we are most interested in inference or prediction and why. Finally, provide n (number of observations) and p (number of predictors): 1. Season ticket holders (STH) are important for both collegiate and professional sports teams. Penn State’s football program wants to use quantity of tickets, section, percentage of tickets used throughout the year, and percentage of games attended to predict whether a STH is likely to renew their seats. They currently have 4,000 STHs.arrow_forwardWe expect a car's highway gas mileage to be related to its city gas mileage (in miles per gallon, mpg). Data for all 1259 vehicles in the government's 2019 Fuel Economy Guide give the regression line highway mpg = 8.720 + (0.914x city mpg) for predicting highway mileage from city mileage. 1 O Macmillan Learning (b) What is the intercept? Give your answer to three decimal places. intercept: Why is the value of the intercept not statistically meaningful? The value of the intercept is an average value calculated from a sample. The value of the intercept represents the predicted highway mileage for city gas mileage of 0 mpg, and such a prediction would be invalid since 0 is outside the range of the data. The value of the intercept represents the predicted highway mileage for slope 0. O The value of the intercept represents the predicted city mileage for highway gas mileage of 0 mpg, and such a car does not exist. mpgarrow_forward

- Stick the landing - Elite female gymnasts compete on 4 apparatus: Floor, Vault, Uneven Bars, and Balance Beam. Simone is investigating the relationship between gymnasts' scores on the different apparatus. She collects a random sample of 75 gymnasts who competed in international competitions between the years 2006 and 2019. For this problem we will look at the scores for the two apparatus, vault and balance beam. Simone constructs a linear regression model using Score on Vault as the explanatory variable and Score on Balance Beam as the response variable. A scatterplot of Simone's data is shown. Elite Womens Gymnastics 13.5 14.0 14.5 15.0 15.5 Score on Vault Simone uses statistical software to fit a linear model to the data.
