Concept explainers
Full-circle rotation is common in mechanical systems, but less evident in biology. Yet many single-celled organisms are propelled by spinning, tail-like flagella. The flagellum of the bacterium E. coli spins at some 600 rad/s, propelling the bacterium at speeds around 25 μm/s. How many revolutions does E. coli’s flagellum make as the bacterium crosses a microscope’s field of view, which is 150-μm wide.

- A wheel rotates through an angle of 324° as it slows down from 87.4 rpm to 18.7 rpm (revolutions per minute). What is the magnitude of the average angular acceleration of the wheel in rad/s2?arrow_forwardAdmiral Picard is riding a bike between cities on the new Romulan settlement planet. His bike has tires of radius72.0 cm and he travels 7.20 km. How many revolutions does one of his tires make during his ride?arrow_forwardThe blades in a blender rotate at a rate of 6200 rpmrpm . When the motor is turned off during operation, the blades slow to rest in 2.6 s. What is the angular acceleration as the blades slow down?arrow_forward
