Concept Introduction:
The force of attraction between two molecules that experience a short-lived dipole is known as London Dispersion force. Length of the carbon chain has a direct relationship with the melting point of the molecule. This is because as the length of carbon chain increases, the number of electrons increases and there will be stronger force of attraction between the molecules resulting in strong London Dispersion forces. As the London dispersion force increases, the melting point and boiling point also increases. This implies that as the length of hydrocarbon chain increases, the melting point and boiling point also increases.
