Would the function of KRAS gene be lost or gained in MDA-MB-231 breast cancer derived cells? Please explain why.
KRAS gene is a gene present on the short arm of chromosome 12 that is responsible for the formation of K-Ras protein. This protein is involved in the RAS/MAPK pathway. The function of this protein is to relay signals inside the nucleus from outside the cell. These signals are responsible for the cell to proliferate or become mature and subsequently perform the specific function. KRAS name has been derived from its origin Kirsten Rat Sarcoma virus in which it was recognized as an oncogene. This oncogene was cellular genome derived, hence, the KRAS gene in the genome of a cell is said to be proto-oncogene.
