The second world war lasted from 1939 till 1945. The war ended with extensive damage to European countries, including the Russians. Only the USA remained unharmed as no battle was fought on American territory. 'Cold War is a term used to refer to the intense rivalry and mutual competition between the USA and the USSR, that started after 1945. This rivalry lasted from the last years of the second world war, till the fall of the USSR in the 1990s.
