Americans increasingly based their claims not simply on the historical rights of Englishmen, but on the more abstract language of natural rights and universal freedom. How did the earlier English Glorious Revolution and the European Enlightenment influence the American colonists?
The fear of Catholicism started the Glorious Revolution in England, which occured from 1688 to 1689. England's Catholic King James II could not fight against Dutch leader William III's vast army and fled to France with his wife. As William III was married to King Jame II's daughter Mary II, after King James II's disposition, William III and Mary II ruled as joint monarchs. The Glorious Revolution brought many changes in England's way of governance. Beginning around 1600, carefully following the Renaissance, the European Enlightenment changed Europe by bringing a new wave of radicalism. The intellectual and philosophical movement introduced secular thought to Europe. Enlightenment philosophers and their ideas changed the world by challenging old traditional orders and views.
