How did the institution of American slavery differ from slavery that had come before (consider slavery in the ancient world)?
Slavery as an institution has existed since the beginning of civilizations. Definite evidence of its practice comes from the Classical Ages, i.e., the Greek and Roman periods. Slaves played the most important part in the economic functioning of the region, and their importance continued to grow well until the 18th to 19th century in areas like the New World. This also gave birth to the cross-Atlantic Slave trade, one of the most infamous exchange networks of slaves in history.
