Henry VIII, the Tudor dynasty's second king, ruled England from 1509 until he died in 1547. Known as the father of the English Reformation, Henry VIII played a significant role in the English Reformation by severing ties with Roman Catholic Church. He instigated the Church of England to break free from Rome in 1532, as the pope had refused to grant him a papal annulment of his marriage. As Henry VIII was eager to marry Anne Boleyn, he and his advisors split the Church from Catholicism. In 1534, the process of separation was concluded; Henry VIII established the Church of England as the nation's official religion.
