An action potential is a common pattern of the quick rise and subsequent decline in voltage or membrane potential across a biological membrane. An action potential has three distinct phases: depolarization, overshoot, and repolarization.

There are two other states of membrane potential in addition to the action potential. Hyperpolarization occurs before depolarization, and hyperpolarization occurs after repolarization. A sufficient current is required to cause a voltage response in a cell membrane; if the current is insufficient, the membrane will depolarize to the threshold.
