P53 is a tumor suppressors protein.   The protein is present in the cell at all times but is activated by protein kinases that are, in turned activated by DNA damage.  A mutation of the P 53 gene in cell results in a form of P53 that is permanently active. What would happen to the mutant version of the P53 gene?

P53 is a tumor suppressors protein.   The protein is present in the cell at all times but is activated by protein kinases that are, in turned activated by DNA damage.  A mutation of the P 53 gene in cell results in a form of P53 that is permanently active. What would happen to the mutant version of the P53 gene?

Group of answer choices
A. it would spread to neighboring cells but not very far
B. it would be found in tumor cells only
C. it would take over the world and make us all do its bidding
D. it would only be found in the original cell in which the mutation occurred
E. it would spread to all cells in the body
Expert Solution
Step 1

Answer) E

It would spread to all parts of the body.

  1. p53 gene act as a tumor suppressor gene and get activated in case of any DNA damage. Hence act as a anti cancerous gene as it also act as a master regulator of other major signalling pathways.
  2. p53 gene regulates cell cycle arrest, DNA repair, senescence, and apoptosis which play major role in cell growth and division.
  3. However, the loss of p53 gene activity results in the generation of tumors which further metastasized lead to generation of cancerous growth.
  4. Mutations that can be both loss of function and gain of function mutates the p53 gene.
