I work as a Counselling Psychologist in a private practice. My client, Kay, comes into my Clinic presenting with a phobia of vomiting. We collaborate together to develop a hierarchy of fearful situations which include vomiting with the plan to expose her to those least distressing and slowly work towards those that are more distressing for Kay. The aim of this treatment is to remove the association Kay currently has to vomiting. This type of behavioural treatment is using which principle of classical conditioning?     Extinction     Acquisition     Discrimination     Generalization

Expert Solution
Classical conditioning

Classical conditioning basically is a process which makes us learn by association. Generally, the subject is exposed to two stimuli repeatedly until he learns to elicit the desired response . Classical conditioning was given by Ivan Pavlov.

There are certain principles of classical conditioning, such as acquisition, extinction, stimulus discrimination, stimulus generalisation.

Acquisition is when the learner learns to acquire the response after pairing one stimulus with the other, until the learner starts eliciting the desired response on one stimulus.

Stimulus discrimination is when the learner learns to discriminate between the two similar stimulus and understand the difference between the two. For example the response of salivation on the bell of lunch versus not to salivate on any other bell .

Stimulus generalisation is when the learner gives same response to a stimulus similar to the original one .

Extinction is a principle of classical conditioning in which the pairing of stimulus is stopped. After stopping the pairing of the two stimulus for some time, the desired response also stops. This process is known as extinction.
