The Chauvet Caves in Southern France are an example of prehistoric cave art in the world. These cave paintings are a testament to the life of early men during the Upper Palaeolithic life in world history. These caves were discovered by Jean Chauvet and two of his friends who were hiking around the region. Other than the rich variety of paintings and art, there is other evidence of human presence along with fossils, prints, and marks of species that have now become extinct.
The caves have been granted World Heritage status by UNESCO.
