Expert Solution
Introduction

Langston Hughes was an African American intellectual known for his flair with the pen. Hughes was a leading member of the Harlem Renaissance, that flowering of African American thinking, music, art and culture which literally set the 1920's on fire. In this essay, Hughes is incisive in his analysis of the pressures that African Americans felt in their artistic journey. The essay was also a response to another African American writer, George Schuyler questioning whether a separate African-American tradition was really necessary.
