A movement called the "Great Migration" took place between 1890 and 1960 wherein the African Americans migrated from the south to the north for job opportunities. This migration between 1914 and 198 was also a part of this movement.  They were more than 500,000 in number and had found a way to escape the atrocities faced in the south. The decision to move up north was motivated by many factors - to escape the Jim Crow laws, to escape the poverty faced after the civil war and to get more job opportunities as a result of industrial expansion in the US. While the attempt to move to the north came with the hope of not being subjected to discrimination, the truth was far form it.
