Source A
Part of an article about an arrest made in connection with the Whitechapel murders. It
was published in the Northern Daily Telegraph, a popular newspaper published in the
North of England, on 7th December 1888.
A BIG THING AT LAST - ARREST OF A POLISH JEW
The Metropolitan Police yesterday made a single arrest, which was reported to be in
connection with the Whitechapel murders. It appears that during the afternoon a man,
described as a Polish Jew, was arrested near Drury Lane, but for what offence is not
clear. This individual is of short stature, with black moustache. It was subsequently
announced that the man was arrested for stealing a watch. The police, however, were
led to believe that he was connected with the recent attempt to murder a woman in
George Street, Spitalfields. It is further stated that the inspector was heard to say to
one of his subordinates: “Keep this quiet; we have got the right man at last. This is a big
thing.”
