How does Derrick Alridge suggest that Booker T. Washington is a complex figure? Do you agree with his conclusions (why or why not)?
Booker T Washington was an African-American educator, writer, and political adviser and was a prominent black American leader. He was from the last generation of enslaved black people and became a leading voice in the struggle of black people. He contributed to black education and entrepreneurship and mobilized the nationwide middle-class blacks to economically strengthen the black community with the support of white philanthropists and politicians. He faced enormous opposition and criticism as his Atlanta compromise did not make any expected improvement to black lives, and leaders like Du Bois and NAACP challenged Washington's political views. His legacy faced controversies from his opponents due to the criticism of accommodationists towards white supremacy.
