Was Reconstruction successful in any way? How could Reconstruction have been handled better? What legacies are we still dealing with as a country today?
The Civil War took place in the 1860s when Abraham Lincoln had become the US President. The aim initially was to preserve the Union but gradually the aim changed in abolishing slavery. The US was divided into two parts - the northern states and the southern states. Each of these states (the Union and the Confederate) had a different goal and hence fought against each other.
