New Spain was a Spanish colony in the Americas. This colony then came to be known as Mexico, after it became independent from the Spanish government. The Spaniards conquered this region from the Aztec Empire in the sixteenth century. Hernan Cortes was the one who played an important role in conquering this territory and then he only named it New Spain.
