The Ottoman Empire was established by Muslim Turkish tribes of central Asia who were driven out to the west by the Mongols. These Muslim tribes who were nomadic began to conquer land in the name of Islam. By the eleventh century, one tribe, that would eventually come to be known as Ottomans had established themselves in northwestern Anatolia. The ruling dynasty derived the name from the most powerful ruler, Osman Gazi or Uthaman in Arabic who had declared independence from Seljuk Turks.
