The Second World War was initiated by Germany in 1939 after they had captured Poland on 1st September 1939. This war was fought between the Central and the Axis powers. Initially the US had decided to stay neutral in the war but in 1941 the US had to get involved with the war. This was because Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor.
